About Head & Neck Surgery

The head and neck region holds some of the body's most important structures: the thyroid and salivary glands, the mouth and throat, the voice box, and the lymph nodes of the neck. Problems here can appear as a lump or swelling in the neck, a change in the voice, a non-healing mouth ulcer, difficulty swallowing, or a gland that is painful or enlarged.

At Centosa, our ENT specialists evaluate every neck lump and growth carefully. We use examination, endoscopy, imaging and biopsy to reach an accurate diagnosis. We then plan personalized treatment, from medical care and observation to precise surgery for thyroid, salivary gland, throat and neck conditions, with a focus on safe outcomes, function and appearance.

Early diagnosis and careful surgery protect your health, your voice and your confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about thyroid, salivary gland, neck and other head and neck problems.

When should I see a doctor for a neck lump or swelling?
See an ENT or head and neck specialist if a lump in the neck lasts more than 2 to 3 weeks, keeps growing, feels hard or fixed, or comes with a change in voice, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or a lump elsewhere. Seek care urgently if a swelling grows quickly, or if you have difficulty breathing or trouble swallowing your own saliva.
What causes a lump in the neck?
The most common cause is an enlarged lymph node reacting to an infection in the throat, mouth or scalp. Other causes include thyroid nodules, salivary gland swellings, cysts present from birth and benign growths such as lipomas. Less commonly, a neck lump can be a sign of a tumour. An examination, an ultrasound and, where needed, a needle test (FNAC) find the cause so the right treatment can be planned.
Are thyroid nodules always cancer?
No. Most thyroid nodules are benign. They are checked with a thyroid blood test, an ultrasound and, when needed, a needle test (FNAC). Many nodules only need regular monitoring. Surgery is usually advised when a nodule looks suspicious or is confirmed to be cancer, when it is large or causes pressure symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, or when the thyroid is overactive and not controlled with medicines.
What causes swelling or pain in the salivary glands?
The usual causes are salivary stones that block the duct, infection of the gland and dehydration. Pain and swelling that appear or worsen while eating are typical of a stone. Less often, a lump in a salivary gland is a benign or malignant tumour. Treatment may include fluids, gland massage and antibiotics, removal of the stone, or surgery to remove the gland or lump when needed.
What should I expect from head and neck surgery and recovery?
Before surgery, you will have a clear plan, the necessary tests and a discussion of the benefits and risks. Most procedures are done under general anaesthesia, and the hospital stay and recovery time depend on the operation. Surgeons place incisions in natural skin creases where possible and take care to protect nearby nerves, the voice and, in thyroid surgery, calcium levels. Your surgeon will explain what to expect for your specific procedure, along with wound care and follow-up visits.
