About Throat, Voice & Swallowing

Your throat does far more than carry food and air. It protects your airway, helps you swallow safely and houses the voice box that lets you speak, sing and be heard. That is why problems here can show up in many ways: a lasting sore throat, hoarseness, a lump-like feeling, pain or difficulty while swallowing, frequent throat clearing, cough, reflux or tonsil trouble.

At Centosa, our ENT specialists assess the throat, voice and swallowing together. We use laryngoscopy, voice evaluation and swallowing assessment to find the root cause. We then offer personalized treatment, from medication, reflux control and voice or swallowing therapy to advanced throat and voice surgery when needed.

A healthy throat means a clear voice, comfortable swallowing and confidence in every conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about throat, voice and swallowing problems.

When should I see an ENT doctor for a throat or voice problem?
See an ENT specialist if hoarseness or a changed voice lasts more than 2 to 3 weeks, if a sore throat keeps returning, or if you have pain or difficulty while swallowing, a lump-like feeling in the throat, or a persistent cough or throat clearing. Seek care urgently if you have difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, trouble swallowing your own saliva, a swelling in the neck, or if you are coughing up blood.
Why has my voice become hoarse?
Hoarseness is most often caused by a throat infection, voice overuse or strain, or acid reflux irritating the voice box. It can also be due to vocal cord nodules, polyps or, less commonly, a more serious problem. A hoarse voice that does not settle within 2 to 3 weeks, especially if you smoke, should be examined with a laryngoscopy, a quick scope check of the vocal cords done in the clinic.
What causes recurrent sore throat and tonsil infections?
Repeated sore throats are commonly due to viral or bacterial infections of the tonsils and throat. Allergies, post-nasal drip, acid reflux, mouth breathing and chronically infected tonsils can also contribute. An ENT examination helps find the cause, so treatment targets the reason it keeps coming back rather than just the symptom.
What causes difficulty or pain while swallowing?
Swallowing problems can come from throat infections, tonsil or throat swelling, acid reflux, problems with the voice box or the swallowing muscles, or growths in the throat. Warning signs include food sticking, coughing or choking while eating, a wet-sounding voice after swallowing, and unexplained weight loss. Assessment with endoscopy and, where needed, a swallowing study finds the cause, and treatment may include medicines, swallowing therapy or surgery.
Can acid reflux affect my throat and voice?
Yes. When stomach acid reaches the throat and voice box, it is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). It often causes throat clearing, a chronic cough, hoarseness, a lump-like feeling and a bitter taste, sometimes without heartburn. Treatment usually combines diet and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding late meals, spicy food and smoking, with medicines. Your ENT specialist will advise the right plan for you.
