About Hearing & Speech Rehabilitation

Hearing is more than detecting sound. The brain has to learn to understand what it hears and to use it for speech and communication. After hearing loss, or after getting a hearing aid or cochlear implant, sounds can seem unclear or unfamiliar at first. Rehabilitation is the guided practice that helps the brain make sense of sound, so listening, speaking and everyday conversation become easier over time.

At Centosa, our audiologists and speech-language therapists create a personalized plan for each child or adult. We combine listening training, speech and language therapy, and regular device mapping and follow-up, with guidance and home practice for families. The plan is reviewed as progress is made, so your goals, whether in school, at work or at home, stay at the center of the program.

Hearing opens the door. Rehabilitation helps you walk through it with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about hearing and speech rehabilitation.

What is hearing and speech rehabilitation, and who needs it?
Hearing and speech rehabilitation is a structured program that helps people use their hearing to understand speech and communicate. It includes listening training, speech and language therapy, and follow-up of hearing devices. It can help children and adults with hearing loss, people who use hearing aids or cochlear implants, children whose speech or language is delayed, and anyone who finds it hard to follow conversations, especially in noisy places. Our team will assess your needs first, so the plan fits you.
When should therapy start after a hearing aid or cochlear implant?
In most cases, the sooner the better. For children, therapy ideally begins soon after hearing aids are fitted or the implant is switched on, because the early years are when the brain learns language fastest. For adults, starting soon after getting a device also helps you adjust to new sounds more comfortably. Your audiologist and therapist will advise the right time for you.
What happens in a therapy session?
The first visit usually includes a hearing and speech assessment and a discussion of your goals. Later sessions use listening exercises, speech and language activities and practice at your level. With children, therapy is play-based and involves parents so skills carry over into daily life. Adults practise listening in quiet and in noise, along with strategies for conversation. The therapist may also check how your device is working, and will give you simple tasks to practise at home between visits.
How long does rehabilitation take?
It depends on your age, degree of hearing loss, the type of device, when therapy began and how regularly you practise. Some adults see steady gains over a few months. Children, especially those with cochlear implants or speech delay, often need therapy over a longer period, sometimes several years, with progress reviewed regularly. We review goals at regular intervals and adjust the plan, so you always know how you are progressing.
How can family members help at home?
Family support makes a big difference. Make sure the hearing device is worn throughout the day and is working well. Talk face to face in a quiet room, speak clearly at a natural pace, and reduce background noise from the TV or radio. Read, sing and play together to build listening and language, and practise the activities your therapist suggests. Most of all, be patient and celebrate small steps. Our team can guide you on what works best for your family.
